✦ Peoples of the Verdigris Isles

Elyri

Often called the Elements Given Form, the Elyri are a people whose bodies embody the fundamental elements of fire, water, air, and earth. Once born from a dark experiment, they are now a naturally reproducing people with their own culture, biology, and magical heritage.

✦ Identity

Elements Given Form

The Elyri are a people whose bodies embody the fundamental elements of fire, water, air, and earth. Though their origins are tied to one of the darkest experiments of the Heliora Compact, the Elyri are no longer considered an artificial creation.

Generations have passed since the people of Velera first emerged from their elemental cocoons. Today, the Elyri are a naturally reproducing people with a distinct culture, biology, and magical heritage.

Elyri children are born without obvious elemental traits. Around childhood, their bodies undergo a transformation known as the Slumbering, awakening them as one of four elemental branches: Ignari, Aquari, Tempesti, or Terrani.

✦ The Four Branches

Four Elements. Countless Manifestations.

An Elyri's branch determines the elemental nature of their physical manifestation, but never determines their personality, morality, occupation, gender, or beliefs.

Fire

Ignari

Fire · Lava · Light

The Ignari embody fire, most often manifesting as flame, lava, heat, or light. Their skin may be red, orange, white, yellow, or black as coal.

Bioluminescence is particularly common among Ignari. Their hair may be red or black, resemble living flame, glow like light, or appear as a shifting mass of crust sinking into lava.

Ignari universally run feverishly hot and may display small flames within their eyes or breath when experiencing intense emotion. They are highly resistant to heat and can work around forges and ovens without protection.

Water

Aquari

Water · Ice · Mist · Steam

Aquari embody water and may manifest as water, ice, acid, steam, or mist. Rare manifestations have included blood and poison.

Aquari often appear perpetually damp, with beads of moisture collecting on their skin and hair. They may smell of fresh rain and clean water. Blue and green skin is common, while their eyes are often somewhat oversized and blue-black.

All Aquari can breathe underwater, though not all are naturally skilled swimmers. Their hair may float as though underwater or form into rigid structures of ice.

Air

Tempesti

Wind · Storms · Lightning · Clouds

Tempesti embody air and commonly manifest as wind, storms, lightning, or clouds. Blue and purple are common colors, though some possess skin as dark as storm clouds.

Their skin may appear to shift or move, while their bodies can feel cold or constantly carry static electricity. Tempesti generally have wispy, lithe builds.

All Tempesti possess the ability to hover slightly above the ground. It is rarely more than a step's height, but represents the remaining magic carried within their bloodline.

Earth

Terrani

Stone · Sand · Metal · Crystal

The titanic Terrani embody earth, manifesting as stone, sand, mud, dirt, metals, or crystals.

Their skin is often brown or metallic, while crystalline Terrani can appear in nearly any color. Some develop patches of crystal or metal across their bodies.

Terrani are universally large and broad. Their skin is hard, almost armor-like, and their eyes often resemble pools of gold, black, or polished gemstone.

✦ Elemental Nature

One People, Four Expressions

The four branches are different expressions of the same Elyri heritage. Families may contain several branches, and no branch is considered superior to another.

🔥 Ignari Heat resistance, fiery manifestations, bioluminescence, and exceptional compatibility with forges and kilns.
💧 Aquari Underwater respiration, moisture-rich bodies, and manifestations ranging from ice to mist, acid, and steam.
⚡ Tempesti Airborne manifestations, static electricity, storm traits, and the natural ability to hover above the ground.
💎 Terrani Dense, hardened bodies with manifestations involving stone, metal, sand, mud, or crystal.
✦ Overview & Origins

The Experiment at Velera

Some scholars argue that the Elyri are simply a mutation. Their history, however, began with an experiment conducted by scientists of the Heliora Compact.

The scientists traveled to the Verdigris Isles without informing the people of the town of Velera of the true purpose of their work. They purchased land and worked alongside the town, improving infrastructure while financially supporting several magitech devices.

The true purpose was to determine whether prolonged exposure to Aetherite produced harmful effects.

Among the devices were misters that activated at night under the guise of watering plants, filling the air with Aetherite exposure, as well as a shielding system designed to keep enemies outside while trapping the contaminated air within.

The results remained inconclusive until the Sundering.

Mutations began subtly. Yet these changes seemed insignificant compared to the sudden storms beneath the dome and random heat waves that caused fires throughout the settlement.

Then the Citadel fell.

In retrospect, scholars believe the original citizens of Velera had begun developing an adaptive form of magic that caused minor epigenetic shifts. The trauma of the Citadel's fall appears to have used the Aether within their bodies to trigger massive epigenetic changes.

The fall destroyed the shield and left the citizens injured or near death.

Yet not a single citizen died that day.

When rescuers arrived, they found crystalline cocoons, pyres of flame that never spread or extinguished, pools of crystal-blue water, and windstorms contained within individual homes.

These phenomena were initially dismissed as chaotic magical activity. Then, on the fourth day, the first Elyri emerged.

He possessed stone-colored skin, crystalline hair, and eyes of solid gold. Over the following week and a half, the entire population of Velera returned, crawling from mud and water, appearing from wind, accumulating during rainfall, and bubbling from pools of lava.

Velera is now little more than a smear in the Badlands, but the people born from that catastrophe survived.

The Elyri are now born, not made. The epigenetic changes within their bloodline, however, remain.

✦ Physical Characteristics

Born Human. Awakened Elemental.

Elyri children begin life without obvious elemental characteristics.

Before the Slumbering

Elyri children generally possess solid-colored skin and similarly uniform eyes. Their appearance often resembles that of their Elyri parents, but they otherwise appear largely human.

The Epigenetic Shift

Between approximately seven and twelve years of age, an Elyri undergoes their epigenetic shift and enters the Slumbering.

The Awakening

When the transformation is complete, the child awakens as one of the four elemental branches and their body permanently reflects their manifestation.

Mixed Families

Elyri families frequently contain multiple branches. An Ignari, Aquari, Tempesti, and Terrani may all belong to the same family.

Elemental Lineage

A branch can manifest in countless ways. Fire, lava, ice, storms, crystal, metal, mist, acid, and other expressions are possible.

Humanoid Biology

Despite their elemental differences, Elyri retain fundamentally humanoid biology and reproduce naturally.

✦ Culture & Society

A People Built Around Community

Born from shared trauma, Elyri society places extraordinary importance on community, emotional honesty, hospitality, and mutual protection.

🏠

Home Is Everyone's Home

Elyri communities often contain generations living within the same household. Neighbors frequently help raise children, and asking for help is considered ordinary rather than shameful.

🤝

Chosen Family

Elyri children commonly grow up surrounded by aunties and uncles. Adoption is common, including adoption by families outside the Elyri themselves.

💬

Emotional Honesty

Elyri do not typically shy away from their feelings. Love is confessed quickly, pain is discussed openly, and vulnerability is considered a natural part of community life.

🛡️

Defenders of Others

Elyri communities are quick to intervene when someone is being harmed. Their natural affinity for dangerous magic has made them especially deliberate about resolving conflict whenever possible.

🏡

Never Truly Gone

Leaving an Elyri community is an enormous emotional event. Those who leave are expected to maintain strong ties through messages, holidays, visits, and support sent back home.

⚖️

Abandonment

The highest crime in an Elyri town is not murder or betrayal, but abandonment. Children, elders, soldiers, homeless people, and anyone left without support are protected by the community.

✦ Belief & Memory

Released Back Into the Elements

Elyri do not generally view death as simple disappearance. They believe the elements have released the individual into freedom and returned them to the world from which their people came.

🔥 Ignari Cremated. Some families forge the ashes into meaningful objects.
💧 Aquari Buried at sea, returning the body to the water.
🌬️ Tempesti Cremated and scattered to the winds. Older traditions involved leaving the body in a high place.
🪨 Terrani Buried within the earth, returning the body to stone, soil, and land.

Elyri also refer to Aetherite as "The Poisonous Gift." Their relationship with the material is complicated, shaped by the knowledge that it both changed their ancestors and helped create the people they are today.

✦ Elyri Architecture

Built for the Elements

Elyri communities are known throughout the Verdigris Isles for architecture designed around elemental living.

♨️

Heated Bathing Pools

Warm bathing pools are often incorporated directly into communal buildings and gathering spaces.

🍲

Community Kitchens

Large kitchens provide food for entire neighborhoods and reinforce the Elyri belief that no member of the community should go without.

❄️

Temperature Control

Elyri magitech includes advanced systems for cooling, heating, and maintaining comfortable environments.

🌉

Hanging Walkways

Elevated walkways and interconnected structures allow movement between buildings while adapting to different elemental needs.

💎

Crystal Windows

Crystal is frequently incorporated into Elyri architecture, serving both practical and decorative purposes.

⚙️

Elemental Engineering

Elyri have developed cutting-edge magitech for fireproofing, acid resistance, shock resistance, temperature control, and more.

✦ The First Breath

When the Elements Awaken

Elyri are naturally filled with excess Aether from birth. This makes them unusually quick studies at magic, possessing both natural control and greater reserves than most people. That excess begins burning away during the First Breath, but by then the child has usually developed a strong foundation in magical knowledge.

Around the age of five, the community begins constructing a Waking House. The child receives it on their sixth birthday and decorates it with their family.

🔥 Ignari

A festival of food, fireworks, entertainment, and bonfires. New Ignari may walk across hot coals or leap through flaming hoops.

💧 Aquari

The new Aquari is taken secretly to the nearest large body of water to swim and play with their community.

🪨 Terrani

Feats of strength, athletic competitions, food, and celebrations. Tournaments may include races or scavenger hunts.

⚡ Tempesti

Loud music, dancing, acrobatics, and the new Tempesti's first flight. Celebrations often become friendly competitions for the best trick.

✦ The Slumbering

The Cocoon Before the Awakening

The Slumbering usually begins between the ages of seven and twelve. It initially presents with flu-like symptoms including sweating, high fever, aches, vomiting, and difficulty remaining awake.

The symptoms generally last between three and ten days before the child enters the cocoon phase.

Children showing signs of the Slumbering are brought to their Waking Houses, where family members sleep beside them until the transformation begins.

Every Elyri cocoon is different, but it is also the first indication of the child's eventual branch.

🔥

Ignari Cocoon

Wrapped in shifting light or completely wreathed in flame.

💧

Aquari Cocoon

Becomes a boiling pool of water or an ice sculpture that never melts.

Tempesti Cocoon

Hidden within a storm cloud that forms around the child's Waking House.

🪨

Terrani Cocoon

The child becomes a statue of stone, crystal, metal, or another manifestation of earth.

✦ Naming Conventions

Three Names, Three Relationships

Elyri traditionally possess a birth name, a societal name, and a manifestation name.

First Name

Birth Name

A poetic name describing the scenery, weather, or atmosphere present when the child was born.

"Song of the Creek Babbling on the Rocks"
Everyday Name

Societal Name

A shortened form of the birth name used in everyday conversation.

Song · Creek · Babble · Rocks · Brock
After Awakening

Manifestation Name

A name based on the first thing the Elyri notices about their new elemental form, usually no more than two or three words.

Green Hand · Blue Flame · Ashen Skin · Brilliant Sheen

Family members are most likely to use an Elyri's birth name. Close friends often use their manifestation name, while acquaintances and the wider community generally use the societal name.

✦ Common Occupations

Elemental Skills in Everyday Life

Elyri can pursue virtually any profession, though their elemental adaptations naturally make certain occupations particularly common.

Any Elyri

Caretaker Aetherwright Architect Builder Artisan Magitech Specialist

Ignari

Blacksmith Glassworker Kilnmaster Chef Metalworker Forge Operator

Aquari

Diver Sailor Brewer Healer River Pilot Salvager

Tempesti

Courier Scout Innkeeper Mechanic Messenger Surveyor

Terrani

Mason Soldier Miner Gemcutter Builder Stoneworker
✦ Lifespan & Biology

A Shorter Life, Intensely Lived

Average Lifespan

Elyri generally live approximately 70 years.

Terrani Longevity

Terrani tend to live somewhat longer than other Elyri, often approaching the average human lifespan.

Branch Biology

Elemental manifestations can influence body temperature, skin density, physical size, environmental resistance, and other biological traits.

Natural Reproduction

Modern Elyri reproduce naturally despite their origins as the result of an experimental epigenetic transformation.

Childhood Appearance

Elyri children are born without elemental characteristics and remain relatively human in appearance until the Slumbering.

Elemental Awakening

Children develop into Ignari, Aquari, Tempesti, or Terrani during childhood rather than being born as fully manifested adults.

✦ Character Creation

Creating an Elyri

An Elyri's branch influences their body, natural adaptations, and relationship with elemental magic. It does not determine who they are.

Race Elyri
Branch Ignari, Aquari, Tempesti, or Terrani
Lineage What elemental manifestation do they embody? Fire, lava, water, ice, storms, stone, crystals, metal, mist, or another expression?
Distinctive Traits Elemental hair, crystalline or metallic growths, unusual eyes, coloration, temperature, scent, moisture, static, or other adaptations.
Personal Appearance How does your character style themselves around their unusual elemental features?
Cultural Background Where were they raised? What was their community like? Are they still closely connected to their hometown?
First Breath What did their Waking House look like, and how did their community celebrate their transformation?
Names What are their poetic birth name, societal name, and manifestation name?
Magic What simple forms of Aether manipulation did they learn as a child?
Community Ties Who helped raise them, and who would they consider family?

Remember: An Elyri's branch does not determine their personality, morality, occupation, gender, or beliefs.

✦ The Elyri

Four Elements. One People.

Born from catastrophe, shaped by the elements, and carried forward through generations, the Elyri are no longer an experiment. They are simply a people who survived.
