The Still Spirit
The Still Spirit represents identity, memory, and personhood. It is the part of the individual that remains constant regardless of the form they wear.
A people born with two spiritual natures existing within a single self, capable of crossing between forms without ever becoming someone else.
The Duvara are a people born with two spiritual natures existing within a single self. Unlike Beastials, whose animal ancestry is permanently reflected in their physical forms, or Aelori, whose bodies are adapted to the waters, the Duvara possess an innate ability to cross between forms.
Among the Duvara, transformation is not viewed as becoming something else. Instead, it is understood as revealing another expression of the self.
The Still Spirit represents identity, memory, and personhood. It is the part of the individual that remains constant regardless of the form they wear.
The Wild Spirit represents instinct, possibility, and alternate form. It is not a separate being, but an equal part of the individual.
Though their spirits may express themselves differently, both aspects belong to the same individual. Transformation does not divide the self.
The spirit is greater than the shape it wears.
The appearance and nature of a Duvara's alternate form varies greatly depending upon ancestry, family traditions, and spiritual lineage.
Wild Duvara possess alternate forms associated with natural creatures found throughout the Verdigris Isles.
Common forms include wolves, foxes, deer, great cats, birds, reptiles, bears, marine animals, insects, and countless others.
Their transformations often reflect ancient family lineages passed through generations.
Mythic Duvara possess forms associated with legendary or supernatural creatures.
Common forms include dragons, phoenixes, serpents, griffins, great stags, spirits, and creatures known primarily through folklore.
Mythic forms are often associated with strong cultural traditions, ancient bloodlines, or unusual Aether influences.
Veiled Duvara possess unusual or difficult-to-classify forms.
Their transformations may be spectral, monstrous, elemental, or otherwise unique.
Some are believed to descend from ancient magical phenomena, while others emerge from rare spiritual lineages.
No two Veiled Duvara are necessarily alike.
The origins of the Duvara remain uncertain.
Ancient traditions claim that the first Duvara were blessed by spirits who taught them that identity was never limited to a single shape.
Others believe the Duvara descend from ancient peoples whose connection to Aether allowed them to walk between forms.
Some scholars suggest that the Duvara emerged from the early history of the Verdigris Isles, adapting over generations to environments where survival demanded flexibility and change.
Whatever their beginnings, the Duvara have existed throughout recorded history and can be found in nearly every region of the Isles.
Though their communities vary greatly, most Duvara share a common belief: the spirit is greater than the shape it wears.
Every Duvara possesses a fundamentally humanoid form, often called the Still Form.
Many Duvara appear entirely human, while others display subtle features associated with their alternate nature.
Possible Traits:
Unusual eyes or pupils · Fangs or sharp teeth · Claws · Horns
or antlers · Animal ears · Tails · Feathers or scales · Unusual
markings · Enhanced senses · Minor magical traits
These characteristics are highly variable and are not required.
A Duvara's alternate form may resemble:
Natural animals · Mythical creatures · Spirits · Strange magical beings · Unique forms specific to a family or lineage
No two Duvara transformations are exactly alike.
Some Duvara are capable of Partial Shifting, temporarily manifesting traits from their Wild Form without fully transforming.
Growing claws · Manifesting wings · Developing scales · Enhancing sight, hearing, or scent · Producing horns or antlers · Temporarily altering their eyes
Duvara culture is shaped by the belief that identity is made of many parts.
Duvara traditions vary significantly between communities, but several customs are widespread.
Some Duvara receive a second name after successfully mastering their transformation.
Young Duvara may undertake a personal journey intended to help them understand their Wild Spirit.
Some communities create ceremonial masks representing the relationship between the Still and Wild Spirits.
Important promises may be sworn in both forms.
Some families use tattoos, jewelry, carvings, or magical symbols to represent an individual's connection to their Wild Spirit.
For many Duvara, identity is not fixed, but layered. A person may wear many faces throughout their life while remaining wholly themselves.
The Duvara do not become something else when they transform. They reveal another part of what they have always been.
Duvara can be found in nearly every profession throughout the Verdigris Isles.
Their ability to transform often makes them particularly suited to occupations such as:
Their alternate forms may allow them to travel through environments inaccessible to others. However, transformation does not determine occupation, personality, beliefs, or morality.
Most Duvara mature at roughly the same rate as humans and generally live between 110 and 160 years, though individual lineages may naturally live longer or shorter lives.
Their biology remains primarily humanoid while in their Still Form.
When transformed, their bodies temporarily reorganize to accommodate their alternate anatomy.
Scholars continue to debate whether this process is biological, magical, spiritual, or some combination of all three.
Despite these differences, all Duvara possess humanoid intelligence and participate fully in the societies of the Verdigris Isles.
Two forms can belong to the same life.
When creating a Duvara character, consider the relationship between their Still Spirit and Wild Spirit.
A Duvara's alternate form influences their appearance, abilities, and potential cultural traditions, but it does not determine their personality, occupation, beliefs, or morality.
Their form is ancestry and spirit — not destiny.
